Rutland Water 20th July2008

fish week 616 (season 21,828) returns 248 (6,356) rod average 2.48(3.43)

Boat anglers fared best last week as bank angling steadied due to the south west winds. The best boat areas were the main basin with Manton Bay showing good numbers of stock fish along with good quantities of grown on fish in that area. The mouth of Hideaway Bay is also producing fish.

A lot of fish are feeding on daphnia so mini lures in various colours are working, black/green, orange etc. Nymphs are still producing with pheasant tails (crunchers), diawl bach and hares ear continuing to catch well. There have been hatches of buzzers, some of them microscopic whilst hatches of sedge and caenis are showing along many shorelines in the evening.

Dominic McAvoy and Kevin Conway from Hurlford in East Ayrshire had a good week boat fishing at Rutland Water. The two youngsters caught 32 fish in three days, including seven fish over 3lb. Kevin had the best Rainbow at 4lb 6oz whilst Dominic caught the best brown at 3lb 1oz, all but one fish amongst the rest caught were over 2lb.

Pitsford Water 20th July 2008

fish week 379 (season 11,213) returns 103 (3,328) rod average 3.6 (3.3)

Pitsford Water hosted a heat of the Lexus Individual on Sunday. A challenging north-westerly wind faced the competitors as they made their way out onto the reservoir. Fish were feeding in the top few feet of water. Nick Dunn coped with conditions best, finishing first with 12 fish for 22lb 1oz. Very close behind in second place, was visiting Czech angler Vladimir Sedivey with 12 fish for 22lb. Vladimir had already pre-qualified along with third placed Elinor Trout Fisheries owner Ed Foster with 9 fish for 17lb 15oz and fourth placed Richard Slater with 5 fish for 11lb. This meant that fifth placed Czech angler David Riha wentt on to qualify for entry into the final at Chew with 4 fish for 9lb 8oz. Another lucky angler was Graham Herbert who qualified on the wild card entry with the third biggest fish of the day, a rainbow of 3lb 2oz.

Anglers at Pitsford Water have enjoyed an amazing rod average for the time of year at 3.6. Sport is still very good late on in the evening around the Pines and off the Gravels. Fish are still feeding on the sedge pupae under the surface, so good patterns are diawl bachs or hares ear fished just under the surface. Dry flies are good but the sub surface nymphs are the way to go at the moment.

Last Tuesday was the final session of the season of Boat Buddies where first time boat users have the opportunity to fish alongside experienced boat anglers. This has proved very popular and will be offered again next season.

Pitsford’s Intermediate Club meets on the first Sunday of the month at 9.30 am and runs until December. An experienced angler will be on hand to show you how to tackle reservoir bank fishing. Telephone 0845 8737573 in advance.
